R. H. O’Malley Inc. Finds Antique Wisconsin Barns a New Home in Rancho Santa Fe, CA

San Diego, CA. February 27, 2009: Upon entering the great room of the new 11,000 square foot home on Mimulus Drive in Rancho Santa Fe, California, your eyes are immediately drawn upward to the massive, weathered beams that form the rich texture of the ceiling of the large space. Each hand-hewn timber is unique and carries within each adze and broad axe mark, the history of the late 1800s Wisconsin barns that were the original homes of these strong oak supports.

The custom home, in the exclusive area known as the Covenant and recently completed by builder R.H. O’Malley, Inc., presented some unique construction challenges. “Since each beam is different, we had to design and fabricate custom hangers to accommodate the varying dimensions,” according to Matt O’Malley, president of RHO. “In some cases we had to place the (very heavy) beam, adjust the hanger, and replace the beam up to three times to get exactly the right fit – this is significantly different than the building process used with your standard dimensional lumber produced from mills today, but I think the result was well worth it.”

Mark O’Malley, COO of the firm, adds, “It was personally gratifying to me that we were able to really enhance the beauty of this new custom home with these historic and still very strong timbers that might otherwise have ended up in a landfill somewhere.” Both white oak beams and red elm barn siding, reclaimed from two Wisconsin barns, were used extensively throughout this Spanish-Mediterranean style home to add unmatched warmth and character to the new residence that, to those of a certain age, are reminiscent of Ben Cartwright’s “Ponderosa.”

While looking up at the finished product it is easy to imagine that the tortured spirits of those still-frigid Wisconsin dairy cows who inhabited the original barns, have now…finally, found eternal peace along the warm, lush green fairway of the 4th hole in California’s Rancho Santa Fe.

R.H. O’Malley Inc. is a southern California custom home builder celebrating over 27 years in business .
